Abilita
Program
Mend
Services is now licensed to deliver the "Abilita Program" in
NSW/ACT. This is a comprehensive, evidence-based practice approach to
the management of the psychosocial factors that accompany musculoskeletal
injuries. It has achieved impressive results in other jurisdictions.
The
Program provides:
An online questionnaire to identify influential psychosocial factors
that affect the worker in the areas of work, home life and cultural
differences. The "Abilita Program" generates an Initial Report
that indicates the level of risk that recovery may be delayed, and whether
persistent pain or disability may develop.
A structured coaching course is delivered to assist participants to
develop improved coping and self management skills. Participants are
actively involved in improving their own health outcomes, have increased
functional capacity and gain greater confidence to remain in, or return
to work and community.
A repeat online assessment is performed on the completion of the"Abilita
Program". This generates the Impact Report, which provides a comparison
with the Initial Report, as a means to give an objective and measurable
of change to the key beliefs and perceptions that drive recovery.
It
is recommended that the Initial Report and Impact Report is provided to
both the injured person and their Medical Practitioner. The "Abilita
Program" includes engagement of all treating practitioners.
The self-report questionnaire provides the injured person an opportunity
to communicate the impact this incident has had on their life. The programme
uses a collaborative and targeted rehabilitation process that will lead
to goal attainment.
The strength of the "Abilita Program" is that it is a standardised
process of Biopsychosocial Rehabilitation integrated into usual rehabilitation
programs; it normalises self-management of injury and reduces the expectation
that treatment solutions are the only pathway to recovery. A reduction
in psychosocial risk factors is a predictor of successful return to work.
The data Mend has confirms very impressive results from "Abilita
Program" coaching when assessment is undertaken before 26 weeks case
duration, however significant gains are also recorded immediately post
intervention for long duration cases. It has a wide application that can
be tailored within the rehabilitation process.
This Program is an innovative strategy that epitomises the Biopsychosocial
approach to Injury Management as described in the Heads of Workers Compensation
Authorities (HWCA) position paper released in October 2009.
Mend Services would welcome an opportunity to implement this newly available
and innovative approach within your service delivery.
