Thousands of Australians are turning up to work under the influence of methamphetamines, according to a new report from South Australia's peak business lobby.

Almost a quarter of a million Australians are turning up to work under the influence of methamphetamines on any given day, a forensic toxicologist warns.

A recent survey of more than 2000 workers found that one in five workers have made a complaint about a workplace safety issue that was never fixed.

One in 10 workers were too afraid to report safety issues because they might be fired and one in 20 have been demoted after making a safety complaint at work.

Farmers are being warned that a simple choice can have tragic consequences and that they must plan ahead and prioritise safety in each and every task.

The warning from WorkSafe follows twelve workplace deaths from incidents on Victorian farms since July 2017, an average of one a month.
​
Six people have died as a result of on-farm workplace incidents since January 1, which is half of the workplace deaths that have occurred in Victoria so far in 2018.

The nationwide initiative aims to raise awareness of work health and safety risks for tradies. Safe Work Australia’s CEO Michelle Baxter said that worksites for tradies are hazardous by nature, and that employers have a duty to ensure their team is working safely.
​
“According to the latest WHS statistics, tradies make up almost one-third of Australia’s workforce, but they represent over half of the country’s serious workers’ compensation claims,” said Ms Baxter.
