Inspectors target structural collapse after spate of incidents

WorkSafe inspectors will hone in on the risks of structural collapse during construction work as part of their latest safety blitz following a spate of incidents in recent months.

A timber-frame wall which struck a 17-year-old worker in Donvale, temporary hoarding falling down near pedestrians in a shopping area at Campbellfield and a scaffold collapsing onto a footpath in North Melbourne have all been the subject of WorkSafe inquiries last month.

Tragically, 16 workers and three members of the public have been killed since 2001 due to structural collapse at construction sites.

The world’s first international standard for occupational health and safety is currently being developed. It will help your organisation provide a safe and healthy workplace for your workers and other people.  It will also assist to prevent deaths, work-related injury and ill-health as well as continually improve OH&S performance.

​ISO 45001 includes the development and implementation of an OH&S policy and objectives which takes into account legal requirements and other requirements that an organisation subscribes. The international standard will help provide a single, clear framework for all organisations irrespective of their size, who wish to improve their OH&S performance and protect those working on their behalf or who may be affected by the organisation’s activities. This includes any PCBU’s, and those working with many contractors over numerous sites, volunteers and or temporary staff.

This one off International event will provide you with a valuable insight as to what is set out in the new standard. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the senior members of the international committee who are responsible for the development of the international standard.

Take care of young workers

Not only does research indicate that 15 to 25 year olds have a 75 per cent greater chance of being injured at work, but in NSW alone, 15 workers in this age group are injured every day.

If you know Fiona Curdie-Evans you will know she is a determined woman – and she strives to do her best. In September 2017 she will be taking on the extremely challenging Kokoda Trek for Mates in Construction NSW. This trek is a 96-kilometre challenge through the jungles of Papua New Guinea to raise money for suicide awareness and prevention in NSW.

This trek is not for the faint hearted, but Fiona is up for the challenge. As the CEO of Mend Services, Fiona knows too well the hardships facing the construction industry.
