With the making of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations 2017), the Minister for Finance, Robin Scott MP, has approved the release of eight proposed compliance codes that are aligned with the new regulations for public comment.
Compliance codes provide duty holders with practical guidance on how to comply with their legal obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) and OHS Regulations 2017. WorkSafe Victoria (WorkSafe), in consultation with key stakeholders, reviewed and updated the compliance codes to reflect the duties and requirements set out in the OHS Act and the new OHS Regulations 2017, as well as ensuring they reflect modern work practices and hazards. The $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital project is a State Government initiative to address the growing health service needs of the Sunshine Coast community. The hospital opened with approximately 450 beds in 2016 and the remaining capacity is expected to be commissioned by 2020/21, which will see all 738 beds used. The hospital has also been planned to allow further expansion of up to a total of 900 beds.
The new tertiary facility is being delivered through a public private partnership (PPP) contract with Exemplar Health, a consortium comprising Lend Lease, Siemens and Capella Capital, with partner Spotless Facilities Services. This consortium will design, build and finance the public hospital as well as maintain it for 25 years. WorkSafe is calling on all regional businesses and workers to prioritise safety to help drive down the number of workplace deaths and injuries across Victoria.
According to new WorkSafe data, almost 7000 workers in regional Victoria were injured seriously enough last year to make a claim, which equates to more than 18 injuries every day. Health care and social assistance (1267 claims), manufacturing (1039) and construction (837) were the industry sectors with the highest number of claims. |
