Victoria Compliance Codes Review

15/5/2017

With the making of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations 2017), the Minister for Finance, Robin Scott MP, has approved the release of eight proposed compliance codes that are aligned with the new regulations for public comment.

Compliance codes provide duty holders with practical guidance on how to comply with their legal obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) and OHS Regulations 2017.

WorkSafe Victoria (WorkSafe), in consultation with key stakeholders, reviewed and updated the compliance codes to reflect the duties and requirements set out in the OHS Act and the new OHS Regulations 2017, as well as ensuring they reflect modern work practices and hazards.
Public comment
With the Minister's approval, the following eight proposed codes are now available for public comment.
  • Hazardous Manual Handling Compliance Code
  • Hazardous Substances Compliance Code
  • Plant Compliance Code
  • Confined Spaces Compliance Code
  • Demolition Compliance Code
  • Facilities in Construction Compliance Code
  • Excavation Compliance Code
  • Noise Compliance Code

Summaries of proposed changes to the codes can be found here.

Employers, employees, other interested parties and members of the public are invited to provide their comments by close of business on Friday, 9 June 2017.

Four additional proposed compliance codes (Managing Asbestos in Workplaces, Removing Asbestos in Workplaces, Prevention of Falls in Housing Construction, and Prevention of Falls in General Construction) are currently being reviewed and are expected to be made available for public comment in late 2017.
