Increased compliance operations for COVID safe workplaces

26/7/2021

The NSW Government has taken an important step in keeping our community safe by announcing an increased presence of compliance inspectors across Sydney and regional areas from today to ensure businesses are complying with COVID-19 Public Health Orders.

Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson, and Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello, said inspectors will be checking businesses are doing their part to protect the community by wearing masks and enforcing the QR code check-in.
“The number one priority for the NSW Government at this time is keeping our communities safe and stopping the spread of the virus. It is important that everyone plays a part so we can get through to the other side,” Mr Anderson said.

“From 12 July 2021, the Service NSW QR code and mask wearing requirements were extended to include additional workplaces, such as construction, manufacturing and warehousing, supermarkets and retail. Customer Service compliance inspectors will be monitoring businesses to make sure they are doing the right thing, keeping us all safe.

“We know complying with new rules can be tough, which is why we will be working closely with businesses over the coming weeks to help them understand the new requirements and ensure COVID safe practices.”
Mr Dominello said it is vital that businesses are taking reasonable steps to ensure people entering their premises are checking-in, including for takeaway orders.

“The Service NSW QR code is not wallpaper, it’s there to protect your staff and customers as we battle the Delta variant,” Mr Dominello said.

“The green tick on the Service NSW app is a safety stamp - it means the contact tracers can do their job keeping the community safe.

“It is now mandatory to check-in at all workplaces, supermarkets and retail stores. It is vital that businesses are displaying the QR code correctly and taking reasonable steps to ensure people entering their premises check-in using their phone or digital sign-in sheet.

“The expanded check-in and mask wearing rules apply to staff and visitors such as maintenance workers, cleaners, electricians and delivery drivers.

“Inspectors from Liquor & Gaming, SafeWork NSW, Fair Trading and the Food Authority will be deployed across NSW, ensuring that is the case.”

More information regarding the expanded COVID-Safe Check In mandate, including affected businesses and industries, can be found on the NSW Government website.
