As part of WorkSafe’s current focus on electrical safety, Steve Darnley from WorkSafe’s Construction Program writes about electrical safety on construction sites.
The basic occupational health and safety duty to eliminate the risk to persons and, if that is not reasonably practicable, to reduce it so far as is reasonably practicable - applies to all commercial, residential, civil and housing construction sites. This duty applies to electric shock risks as well as the other risks associated with construction work.
This duty is not diminished by the job size or whether it’s a new build, an extension, renovation, repair works, a union job or a non-union job.
Historically, electrocution is one of the leading causes of death during construction work. Unfortunately, too many people in the construction industry are complacent when it comes to electricity and only ever think about electricity when it goes off.
